The Real Alternative

Safer - We Can Cut Crime

Lib Dem Councillors

Cllr Nigel Bennett with Lib Dem Group

  • We will maintain funding for an ASBO officer in Babergh

  • We will support the police through Safer Neighbourhood Teams.

  • We need to provide young people with more things to do in our communities so that they do not resort to crime, anti-social behaviour and vandalism

  • In Hadleigh and Sudbury we need local control over monitoring of CCTV pictures, as well as monitoring them from the central control room in Ipswich

  • We will ensure that Babergh enforces new pub licenses.

Cleaner and Greener

  • We want to expand the Community Warden scheme which currently operates in Sudbury, Cornard and Chilton. It combats amongst other things:

  • - Litter

  • - Dog fouling

  • - Fly tipping

We take global warming seriously:

  • We want to improve energy efficiency and reduce fuel poverty

  • We would seek to make further improvements to recycling - recycling at Babergh has already been a great success. When the blue bins were introduced to replace pink bags recycling rates shot up. The brown bin scheme has also been a success

  • We have campaigned against the second runway at Stansted.

Healthier

  • We will continue to support and extend the Be Active scheme and our Dual Use Sports Centres

  • Providing young people with sports facilities keeps them healthier and gives them an alternative to hanging round on street corners!

  • We will responsibly manage the restoration or rebuilding of Hadleigh Pool.

  • We will continue to support the retention of a health facility with inpatient beds in Sudbury.

Affordable Housing

  • We want to maximise the amount of affordable housing in new developments like Chilton

  • We will work with parishes to find suitable sites in villages for affordable housing, so that young people can stay in the communities where they grew up.

Transport

  • We will continue to campaign for a Western Bypass for Sudbury to relieve the historic town centre of traffic.

  • We will fight to retain bus services in the face of cuts by the Conservative controlled County council.

Thriving communities

  • We will continue to support villages shops, pubs and Post offices through the business rate relief scheme

Value for Money

  • We will work with other authorities to reduce costs to the council tax payer. For example we have recently signed a joint contract for refuse collection with Mid Suffolk District council. We will also work with other authorities to reduce costs on major items like IT and to learn from the experience of others, for example, with regard to the administration of revenues and benefits.
