The Conservatives are abandoning Climate Action

The Conservatives are abandoning Net Zero and the environment, and want to keep us chained to expensive, volatile fossil fuels.

The devastating heatwaves scorching Britain’s landscape, fuelled by climate change and sparking wildfires, food shortages, and danger to human life has been a feature of this summer.

It’s clear we need a comprehensive response - from adaptation, like providing sufficient cooling and insulation, to tackling climate change head-on by boosting renewables.

The Conservatives announced their response . Instead of tackling the seriousness of climate change, they want to follow Reform, repeal the Climate Change Act and abandon Net Zero.

Their so-called ‘plan’ ignores the dangers of climate change and the devastation we’ve witnessed this summer. Instead, it would scrap our requirement to prepare for climate impacts and add over half a billion tonnes of CO₂ emissions - nearly one and a half times our current annual emissions.

Instead of lowering energy bills, the Conservatives would keep Britain chained to volatile global fossil fuel markets, continuing to leave us vulnerable to the whims of dictators like Vladimir Putin and the recklessness of Donald Trump.

Just this week, Trump’s war against Iran has pushed up inflation once again, as we face the highest rise in gas prices in four years.

The Conservatives left us with sky-high energy bills and inadequate energy security. Rather than fixing their mess, they’re more focused on chasing Reform’s tail.

We need to back Britain’s energy sovereignty by boosting renewables here in the UK and continuing to push for Net Zero.

The Liberal Democrats’ plan to halve energy bills over the next ten years involves:

  • An emergency home insulation scheme.
  • Fully breaking the link between gas and electricity prices.
  • Stimulating a rooftop solar revolution.
  • Giving every household an essential amount of energy at a discounted rate, equal to 50% of typical consumption; paid for by clawing back the windfall profits from energy network operators.

That’s a real plan that takes both climate change and the cost-of-living seriously.

The Conservatives have learnt nothing from this record hot summer, nor the current energy crisis. Let’s continue to show them the way.
