We just defeated Farage's plan to withdraw from the ECHR
You may have read that Nigel Farage recently presented a bill in Parliament to tear up people's hard-won rights by withdrawing from the ECHR. The Liberal Democrats defeated him standing up against Nigel Farage’s latest attempt to drag our country away from its proud tradition of freedom, fairness and justice.
Farage’s Bill would have taken Britain out of the European Convention on Human Rights - written after the Second World War to protect ordinary people from tyranny and abuse, and was championed by Winston Churchill himself.
Only one country has ever left the Convention: Putin’s Russia.
That tells you everything you need to know about the company Farage keeps and the future he wants for our country.
While Labour Ministers sat on their hands and the Conservatives voted with Farage, it was Liberal Democrat MPs who showed up to defend Britain’s proud history as a champion of the rule of law and human rights for all.
Our local Conservative MP Mr Cartlidge was one of those Conservatives voting in favour of our withdrawal highlighting again just how much he and his party have deserted the centre ground of British politics as they slavishly chase Reform into ever more extreme right wing policies.
We will not let Farage rip up the rights that protect every single one of us. These are the laws that have brought justice for the Hillsborough families, protect children facing abuse, and deliver accountability for victims of police failings.
That is the Britain we believe in
